International Year of Astronomy 2009
Posted by Florian Hester in Astronomy on March 18th, 2009
There are quite some amazing things up there in the sky in the night, most people (like me) barely get to see them because of light pollution. I had a chance once in Austria, in the mountains to get some views of the stars and some photo’s. The views were great but the photo’s were not, nothing but black space. My father has an Canon EOS 350D camera, unfortunately he could not use them because of cloud coverage when i discovered my photo’s were black.
My father did made a succesful photo, not made in Austria, but in the lowly light polluted city where i live. It is a picture of Mars, well, it is very small on the picture. this photo was made by my father using his EOS 350D camera.

The red planet
Yes, there are a lot better pictures of Mars and the picture could be better. Yet this is the first picture my father or i made from another planet.
I myself am very interested in astronomy. My father not so much. Just looking up to the sky and realizing the massive size the galaxy really is, is just awesome. I really puts me to thinking. I try to read up on some astronomy every day to learn something. APOD may not be the best source to do so with, but its a “light” read everyday.
This year, i hope i learn something more with this year being International Year of Astronomy. It is nice to learn and see pictures, but nothing beats seeing the real thing. A telescope is on my list of things to get, amongst many unfortunately. In the mean while i will have to push my father in to taking pictures with his camera of the night sky.
